The Wallarah Area Learning Community, consisting of Budgewoi, Blue Haven, Northlakes, Toukley and Gorokan Public Schools, and Northlakes and Gorokan High Schools, have been selected to be part of the Physically Active Kids Project.
The project was organised as part of an interagency grant by NSW government departments Premier and Cabinet, Education and Health, and the NSW Office of Sport. The project involves delivering a program of physical activities to students during recess and lunch breaks, and using technology to provide a menu of activity options for students to freely choose from each day. “Our entire school has been joining together to eat their recess and lunch. “This is promoting a lovely sense of community amongst our students and staff,” said Budgewoi Public School Principal, Kerry Moore.
“After eating time, the students are notified of the activities that they are able to participate in during that break. “Our teachers have worked hard to put together a variety of activities for our students to enjoy. “We have both active and passive activities for the students to choose from, including boot camp, soccer, touch football, basketball, walking groups, gardening, handball, mini bikes, hoola hooping and quiet games in the library. “We are very excited about this new initiative and it has been wonderful seeing so many of our students actively participating in games and activities led by our staff. “Data will be collected during the project and the schools will receive a screen as part of the project. “There has been a lot of excitement about the activities in the first week,” Moore said.
