OneWave holds Fluro Friday events at local beaches

Non Profit Surf community organisation, OneWave, celebrated its sixth birthday on March 22 by holding Fluro Friday events at 100 beaches around the world, to raise awareness of mental health.
“From Australia to the Philippines, to Scotland to Peru, OneWave communities stood at the water’s edge dressed in their brightest fluro, linking arms, with a simple message, to let anyone facing mental health challenges know that they are not alone,” said OneWave Fluro Friday event organiser, Sarah Judd.
Judd organised a Fluro Friday event at McMasters Beach, with other local events happening at North Avoca and Umina Beaches.
The ethos behind OneWave is that everyone should have the chance to ride waves and openly talk about mental health without being judged.
“When I was diagnosed as bipolar seven years ago, it was surfing and good people that helped me the most.
“Sometimes, one wave is all it takes” said OneWave Founder, Grant Trebilco.
In just six years, OneWave has created a global impact, raising awareness and reducing social stigmas around mental health issues through their Fluro Friday events.
“Bright colours make people happy and help start conversations about an invisible issue.
“Combine that with surfing and it is a great recipe to help free the funk,” Trebilco said.
Fluro Fridays started at Bondi Beach in 2013, and consist of surfing, free yoga, and an anti-bad vibes circle, allowing people to share stories in a safer environment.
They have since gone viral, with sessions held at more than 170 beaches globally.
In 2018, the OneWave community garnered global media attention when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan joined the anti-bad vibe circle wearing colourful leis for Fluro Friday at Bondi Beach.
The MacMasters Beach event commenced with its own anti-bad vibes circle at 7:30am, followed by a fluro surf session and a range of other beachside wellness activities including yoga, tai chi and a beach walk.
