Ettalong Memorial Bowling Club’s Bailey Meti was a part of a Central Coast under-18 side that claimed the 2019 Metropolitan Shield on March 3.
The side consisted of bowlers from across all Central Coast Zone bowling clubs with Meti the only representative from a Peninsula club.
“Hosted this year by Sydney North West Zone (Zone 10), the Metropolitan Shield was held at Northmead Sports Club where our side competed against the host Zone, Greater Western Sydney (Zone 5), Sydney South West (Zone 12), Central and Southern Sydney (Zone 13) and llawarra (Zone 16),” said Bowls Central Coast publicity officer Mr Kevin Dring.
“Central Coast opened with a 3-0 win against Zone 5.
“Then they had an outstanding victory against Zone 12, winning two rinks and drawing another, after they lost 11 shots on the first three ends.
“The third game against Zone 13 resulted in two win rinks and one drawn rink,” Mr Dring said.
At lunch, Central Coast was leading the event on 16 points but after lunch had to play the two second-placed sides of Zone 16 and Zone 10 who were both on 10 points.
“Halfway through the fourth game, it was tight on all rinks but the side knuckled down and all rinks recorded a win against the second place side.
“Our side could not be beaten for the title,” Mr Dring said.
Mr Dring said the win was all the more special because it was the Central Coast Zone’s first Under-18 side to contest the Metropolitan Shied.
“The team was responsible for the first Under-18 Side win this Zone has had since Aron Sherriff was a junior.”
